John started his career in Indirect Taxation with HM Customs & Excise (now HM Revenue & Customs) before VAT was introduced. He assisted with the launch of the new tax and subsequently spent many years as a Senior Officer involved with compliance and training. John also gained experience in general customs (import duties etc) and excise work. He moved into the commercial sector in 1989 and over the next few years held the position of Group VAT Manager for two ‘household names’ plcs. in the manufacturing and retail sectors. John then further developed his career and experience by working as a consultant for several large national and international accountancy practices. Having gained a wealth of experience in VAT he formed Mayell Shearer Ltd so that he could provide a very high quality service to clients, under his personal management and control. John has worked in virtually every sector including property development, charities, public sector, manufacturing and retail. If you have a problem it is very likely that he will have come across a similar situation in the past!
